Instant-Crush in Gran’Dad of Tangletown
Improvement Co.🥁 presents Instant-Crush in Gran’Dad of Tangletown ci. 1927
Location - Fuller Park Tangletown
Gran’Dad of 1927 is one of our most storied acquisitions and further restoration examples that began with a deed passing from his multi-generational owner whose depression era frugality led to the building staying completely intact: from birch shaker kitchens to original hardware & lighting.

Scarcities abound in this deco era apartment in every room from west to east. Corner oak dining buffets were restored and lined with William Morris grandma floral. All millwork in the unit was tirelessly brought to bare wood and stain cocktailed under 5-6 coats of matte lacquer.
Gran’Dad’s units are vast boxcars with footprint depths rarely seen in Tangletown. We amplified the feeling of the common areas by slightly opening the kitchen to accommodate a socially leaning peninsula while repurposing adjoining hallway wardrobes to create in-unit laundry rooms.
The kitchens were modernized in part by drawing up new lowers and the range wall cabinetry under templated stone counters, formatted in a period-correct manner to honor the existing birch uppers that will remain for another century. Like all our legacy examples the Crush is appointed with vent-a-hood, cooks range and 4-door euro fridge built into a pantry wall.
Instant-Crush is aptly named for her poppy colorways from riviera blue enameled cabinetry under lagoon green ceramic tile , rose-Burgandy paneled stairwell all blended together with a synth-disco paper married to traditional grandma florals in the bath & dining hutches.
The hallways in Gran’Dad are so stretched giving bowling alley vibes, that we chose to install full panel and vintage sconces above a psychedelic wallpaper that makes for a playful corridor between the guest and primary and bathroom highlighted by the birch linen stack that we stripped for original swagger.
The unit has all new water lines, plumbing & electrical as well as a Weil-McClain boiler that heats the entire ship. Modern replacement anderson windows are installed from the kitchen back with updated storms to cover the original 6 pane double-hungs.
Gran’Dad is truly an inspiring and special place to spend a chapter of your life, often ending with it being your last landlord, as the current tenant has begun her own tudor restoration that is stamped for fall completion.
The unit includes assigned parking space, storage locker as well as huge basement for bikes and lake gear. The front terrace faces fuller park and serves as a wonderful space for bonfires or outdoor cooking.
Thanks again to our team of craft trades for executing yet another truly remarkable example of what the classic home is capable of.
